The property is situated at the southern edge of Bedeciu village in Cluj County, resting precisely on the boundary between the village proper and the open countryside. The owners sought out an isolated, uninhabited household—even one in advanced decay—specifically to revive traditional values. The restoration philosophy focused on returning the home to its original state by stripping away modern additions while simultaneously introducing a contemporary vision for the interior living space.house
The household consists of the main house, which was fully restored in the first phase, and an old annex slated for future renovation. Because the building was in an advanced state of degradation, the priority was identifying salvageable elements that could restore its initial charm.
The Porch (Prispa): A defining feature of the home, the porch had been enclosed with glass and wood panels over the years; these were removed to reveal the original open architecture.
Roof and Facade: The roof tiles were replaced with traditional wood shingles (șiță), and a dormer window was added to increase natural light upstairs. The walls were finished inside and out using a traditional mixture of clay and straw, then plastered with lime and straw.
The Entrance: To eliminate modern „parasitic” elements, the concrete entrance steps were demolished and replaced with river stone masonry bonded with clay
While the exterior is strictly traditional, the interior has been reimagined. The original layout of two separate rooms with individual outdoor entrances was unified by removing an interior wall and maintaining just one main access point.
Spatial Flow: The ground floor houses a kitchen, a bathroom, and a living area, with a wooden staircase leading to the sleeping quarters in the attic. A section of the ceiling was removed to create a double-height open volume above the living area.
Materials: The windows, doors, stairs, and flooring were crafted entirely from reconditioned elements found on-site or procured locally. The central stove was rebuilt by a team of craftsmen from Maramureș.
Furnishings: The space blends history with function. The kitchen features a countertop made from old ash wood and cabinetry masonry with doors crafted from recycled roof timber. Preserved heritage pieces include the original table and chairs, a plate rack (blidar), and a dowry chest.
